“A feast for the eyes, ears, heart and soul” – NJ.com

The year is 1905. Race, religion, and romance mix in this acclaimed American Drama, by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage. Intimate Apparel is the winner of five national awards for Best Play. A young, single African American seamstress, Esther, supports herself by creating exquisite lingerie for wealthy Manhattan clients. When a letter arrives from a stranger, it awakens a desire within her that leads to the love she yearns for but is nothing like she expected. Esther’s heart seems to be torn in two. She also has feelings for the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth, and his heart is with her, but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both. The play offers poignant commentary on an era when the cut and color of one’s dress – and skin – determined whom one could and could not marry or event talk to in public. Khanisha Foster (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Bluest Eye) returns to CFRT to direct this tender, exquisitely-written historical romance.
